Description
This study deals with the factors which affect democratization and need to be considered when formulating a Palestinian Basic Law to function as an interim constitution. Issues discussed include pluralism, factionalism, the attitudes of the “Intifada” generation, the difficulties in the transition from underground movements to open democratic activities, and the hierarchical society with its family and group loyalties. The study also examines prospects for the new Palestinian self-government, the institution-building process and implications for the implementation and enforcement of new laws. The final chapter is devoted to a case study of constitutional and human rights, focusing on women and their status within society.
